Ramaphosa told MPs that agreements with independent power producers to connect more than 2,000MW of additional capacity from existing projects were being finalized by June 2021.
Additionally, a risk mitigation power procurement program will unlock another 2,000 MW of emergency supply within 12 months.
Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe finally released approvals to add new electricity from independent power producers to the grid. According to the bulletin, SA will obtain an additional 6,800MW from wind and solar photovoltaic projects, 513MW will be generated from storage, 3,000MW from gas and 1,500MW from coal.
“The electricity produced from the new generation capacity will be acquired through one or more bidding procedures that are fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and profitable,” the bulletin said.
Ramaphosa said a long-term solution to Eskom’s R450bn debt load was being finalized.
He added that Eskom’s restructuring work was continuing into separate entities for generation, transmission and distribution.
