Cape Town – Eskom is targeting several companies that were overpaid R4 billion for their work, and the power company went to court to recover the money.
Eskom CEO André de Ruyter told the Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Friday that they were working closely with the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on a number of corruption cases in the entity.
However, the power company wanted to recoup R4 billion in overpayments to various companies.
De Ruyter told Scopa that one company was overpaid R1bn while another was overpaid R735 million. Two other companies received an overpayment of R1bn each, he said.
“Employees involved in these matters are being investigated by the SIU,” De Ruyter said.
He said they have referred some of the cases to the National Prosecutor’s Office for criminal action and have gone to court to demand the contracts and recover the money.
In one particular case, 11 people were charged and the NPA was prosecuting the cases, De Ruyter said.
Scopa President Mkhuleko Hlengwa said they want to deal with corruption in Eskom.
He said that those who are responsible for corruption must face the full power of the law.
“We are saying that we are not separated from Eskom. We fully understand and appreciate the complexity of the challenges that prevail at Eskom and we fully understand that there will be bold and difficult decisions that must be made as part of corrective action to deal with historical issues,” he said Hlengwa.
“We are here to improve that process because fundamental and ultimately our job is to ask the question, ‘what killed the patient.’
” We look back and forth; we do the best of both worlds in that regard, “Hlengwa said.
