Fire at the Panorama composting plant.
The city of Johannesburg has apologized to residents affected by the smoke after the fire that broke out at the Panorama composting plant in Roodepoort.
The city’s apology comes after residents raised concerns about the health hazards associated with the burning site that remained after the recent fire, which started Tuesday, September 29, 2020.

The mayor’s committee (MMC) member of environmental and infrastructure services, Mpho Moerane, said the fire has affected communities in districts 70, 83, 85, 97 and 126.
Moerane said that Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) have been working hard to contain the billowing smoke.

However, he warned residents that the smoke could take a week or more before it clears.
“The City has employed specialized services from other departments and related institutions, such as Working for Fire, which have more experience in fire fighting.
“All of our senior managers are permanently on site to assist and unblock the blocks towards speedy resolution of the challenge we face,” Moerane added.
The City said it would continue to deploy the necessary resources to ensure the fire is extinguished.
