Hawks make second arrest in connection with R3.2m Covid-19 welfare fund fraud

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit arrested a second person on Wednesday in connection with the R3.2 million Covid-19 welfare fund fraud.

According to Hawks spokesman Captain Matimba Maluleke, its members received a tip that the 75-year-old had withdrawn more than R150,000 from a shelter account in Mtititi to conceal it from ongoing investigations.

Mtititi Company Director Hlamalani Dorris Mashimbye, 47, was arrested on October 9 for allegedly claiming Covid-19 welfare funds from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) on behalf of her former Expanded Program workers. Public Works.

“Our investigations revealed that the workers’ contracts were terminated before the country was closed,” Maluleke said.

Mashimbye appeared in Malamulele Magistrates Court on Monday and the case was postponed until October 19 to request bail.

The 75-year-old is expected to appear in Malamulele Magistrates Court on Friday.
