Golf clubs and barbed wire: Senekal today

Roadblocks and tight security surrounded Senekal, in the Free State, on Friday before the appearance of two men who allegedly killed farm manager Brendin Horner.

On the outskirts of the small farming town, police officers stopped and searched the vehicles for weapons, ordering drivers to get out of the cars while they carried out thorough checks.

Buses carrying EFF supporters dressed in red party insignia were parked a short distance from the court.

While the EFF had argued that Friday’s demonstrations should be peaceful, some of its members carried baseball bats, golf clubs and clubs and waved them in the air as they walked up the street leading to the courthouse, singing songs in praise from their leader, Julius Malema.

Meanwhile, groups of farmers, mostly in bakkies, gathered in groups along the route to court.

A police helicopter flew over the area as an armored police vehicle made its way into the area near the court.
