Witz said the prison had previously alerted him that Agrizzi was unwell and that his condition was being monitored.
Giancarlo told TimesLIVE on Thursday night that the family had only had information that was already in the public domain.
“We have been inundated with many calls but we don’t know much either. The only information we have at our disposal is in the media. It is a difficult time for us as a family. We would rather not say it, but ask for space, ”he said.
News of Agrizzi’s hospital admission first came from the prison services department, which said Agrizzi, accused of corruption, had a right to medical care.
“The prison services department can confirm that the remand detainee Angelo Agrizzi has been transferred to an external public hospital for further medical attention. All inmates have the right to receive medical care in accordance with prison regulations, ”said spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.
Agrizzi’s sudden hospital admission came hours after his lawyers submitted an offer to a higher court for his release from prison. Witz confirmed that an appeal was filed with the Johannesburg High Court on Thursday morning, following the denial of bail on Wednesday.
