Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has called on the rectors of the University of KwaZulu-Natal to tighten security measures against criminal acts following the burning of the Oval student residence on the Westville campus on Monday.

Disgruntled students who were recently ordered to vacate the building are suspected of being on the spot.

A student who requested anonymity said that campus residency had not been registered with eThekwini Township for 10 years.

“The building is old and full of cracks, so the university told the students to move, but did not provide alternative accommodation,” he said.

Nzimande called on the university management, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, to quickly present those responsible for “this shameful and outrageous” act.

“Destruction of university property is a criminal offense and everyone who participates in such acts must be arrested and face the full power of the law,” Nzimande said.

Nzimande said the university community, students and staff alike, should isolate, identify and expose these criminals who continue to vandalize university property.

“They have a duty to provide any relevant information to law enforcement authorities so that the culprits can be prosecuted.”

“These are criminals who must be totally removed from our institutions; They do not deserve to be within our institutions but belong to prison, ”said Nzimande.

He said that while the government continues to invest billions of rand in improving the infrastructure of post-school education and training institutions, the university community must ensure that it preserves and protects the existing infrastructure.
