Returning to a Manchester United team that lacks confidence and character will do little for Harry Maguire’s attempt to get back into form, says Roy Keane.
The most expensive defender in world football has been through a torrid time at the start of the 2020-21 campaign. The incidents on and off the field conspire against the £ 80 million ($ 104 million) center-half, who is fighting for his club and his country.
Questions have been asked about Maguire’s demonstrations for United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team came off the blocks and eroded much of the optimism they amassed last season.
The 27-year-old has also struggled when he was away for England and received a reckless red card in his most recent outing with the Three Lions against Denmark.
Former Red Devils captain Keane believes England manager Gareth Southgate should have done more to protect a clearly misplaced player before sending him into battle in the UEFA Nations League.
“I think sometimes he [Gareth] He knows Harry has had a hard time on and off the court, a pat on the back would have helped, “Keane said. ITV Sport. “That would have taken him away from Gareth.”
Finding no spark in international service, Maguire must now return to Old Trafford and strive to breathe new life into the shaky United.
Keane thinks it’s going to be a big question given the troubles the Red Devils have, and one man desperate to turn his luck warned that things may get worse before they get better.
“The only downside is for Maguire, he will go back to a team that is not full of confidence,” Keane added. “I’ve been in situations before where I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt like the costumes were the best in the world. He’s not going to get that, in those last four.
“I wouldn’t be anywhere near those guys, I don’t see them as leaders.”
While Keane fears for Maguire, England’s boss Southgate has endorsed him as an important part of his future plans.
He said: “Knowing Harry as I do, he will want to play soccer.
“The best place for him is in the field. We know you’re happy that everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing. This is life as a top player. If nobody is interested, your life is very simple.
“If you are captain of United and one of the best players in England, everyone has an opinion. You have to ride with that. It is strong enough to deal with it. It has to show the resilience that I know it has to overcome.
“He’s going through a period where he gets a lot of sticks thrown at him, but he’s big enough to deal with it, he’ll be stronger for it. You have our support and I am sure your club will do the same. You’re getting all kinds of things right now, from people who should know better. None of us like to be in the middle of that storm. “
