Cape Town – Police have strongly condemned another attack on an elderly person, stressing that it “represents a serious moral decline in society.”
A manhunt began in Mpumalanga after the body of an 80-year-old woman was discovered in a freezer in Pankop, near Mmamethlake.
The police have appealed to a woman, named MmaThato, who was the deceased’s caretaker and is believed to be from Lesotho, to go immediately to the nearest police station as they believe she can assist in the investigation.
According to a preliminary investigation, the victim lived with her 10-year-old grandson and the caregiver, who had been hired by the family, SAPS said in a statement.
On Monday, the boy returned from school only to find that no one was home. The door to the house was wide open, but the burglar-proof door was closed.
He then began asking neighbors about the whereabouts of his grandmother and the caretaker. Neighbors tried to help in the search and other relatives were also informed about the matter.
As they searched, neighbors became suspicious when they noticed a coffee table, gas stove, and television set on top of the freezer.
“Then they took out the items and discovered the old woman’s lifeless body inside the freezer.”
The public with knowledge of MmaThato’s whereabouts are also urged to contact Detective Captain Solomon Moshime on 082 065 1355 or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, a notice can be given on MySAPSApp.
In Valbank, a few kilometers from Mmamethlake, a 91-year-old woman was allegedly seriously assaulted by a caretaker.
After the incident, the 45-year-old suspect fled the scene and the matter was brought to the attention of the police, who opened a case of assault with the intention of inflicting serious bodily harm.
The suspect, believed to be from Lesotho, was located and arrested in Pretoria. He is due to appear before the Mbibana Magistrates Court on Friday, where he is expected to request bail.
