CAPE TOWN – Charges of fraud against a Western Cape professor who classified as African on his CV have been dropped.

Glen Snyman, a teacher at Grootkraal Elementary School in Oudtshoorn, was due to appear for a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, but just before attending the session, the matter was dropped.

Snyman is also the founder of an organization called People Against Race Classification.

In 2017, Snyman applied for the headmaster job at another school and claimed to be African and not of color. He did not get that position.

Snyman received the charge sheet a month ago, which said he committed a common law crime.

The provincial MEC for Education, Debbie Schäfer, said she only found out on Wednesday that the teacher was accused of fraud.

Schäfer said he was surprised to find that his department was charging someone for how they choose to classify themselves.

“One of the many evils of apartheid was the classification of people by their supposed race. This is why many people have fought to rid our country. So I am understandably surprised to find that my department is apparently charging someone for how they choose to classify. If this is the case, it is anathema to me.

And we will not tolerate the victimization of people who do not conform to an artificial and arbitrary classification of who they consider themselves, ”Schäfer said in a statement.

“I have requested all the information on this case as a matter of urgency because, at first glance, it does not seem to be in line with what this administration defends.”
