JOHANNESBURG – Despite citing serious medical conditions and his lack of travel documents as some of the reasons he should be granted bail, the request from former Bosasa COO Angelo Agrizzi was rejected by the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.

On Wednesday, the court heard how Agrizzi should be released from prison after he was charged with corruption and bribery.

However, the magistrate agreed with the State’s argument that it was a flight risk given that several financial transactions were recorded to offshore accounts between 2018 and the beginning of last year, just days before Agrizzi took the stand. in the state commission of capture.

Deposits of up to R24 million were made in investment accounts abroad and not declared in his affidavit in court, as well as the acquisition of property and a luxury vehicle in Italy.

These were just some of the considerations that Magistrate Phillip Venter made before deciding to dismiss Agrizzi’s application for bail.

“I am satisfied that Mr. Agrizzi has the financial means to establish and maintain a comfortable lifestyle. From what I have before me, it looks like it could be Italy, ”Venter said.

Agrizzi is charged with corruption and bribery related to money paid by Bosasa to former ANC Member of Parliament Vincent Smith, worth 800,000 rand.

His lawyers argued that he had nothing to do with the case as he acted as an intermediary for the late Bosasa CEO Gavin Watson.

Meanwhile, the Smith affair was postponed until December 3 for the start of the hearing.
