The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) has signed the salary proposal made by the management of the Bombela Operating Company (BOC), thus effectively ending the strike.
Gautrain workers affiliated with Numsa had been on strike since October 5 over a wage dispute.
The union was demanding an 8% raise, which was met by an offer for a 4.1% raise from Gautrain.
Numsa spokesman Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said Gautrain’s management made another proposal that union members accepted.
Low-income earners earning up to R8,500 per month will receive a raise of R900 per month, while those earning between R8,501 and R20,000 per month will receive an increase of R850 per month.
A 4.1 per cent raise has been offered to those earning more than R20,000.
The increase will be delayed until July 1, 2020
“We welcome the signing of the agreement, particularly since the increase that has been obtained benefits the lowest paid workers. If workers had received a 4.1% raise it would have meant that the lowest paid worker would only get an increase of R348, compared to an increase of R900 per month that we got, which actually translates into an increase of more 10%.
“We thank our members who were determined with their demands. Due to their courage and the sacrifices they made in embarking on a strike, all Gautrain workers have received an increase in their wages. Now that the agreement has been signed today, the strike has been officially called off. Our members have agreed to resume their duties tomorrow morning (Thursday, October 15), ”said Hlubi-Majola.
Trains will continue to run at 15-minute intervals during peak periods and 30-minute intervals during non-peak periods, and Gautrain’s standard train service will resume on Friday.
All stations will remain open, Gautrain said.
