PARIS – President Emmanuel Macron ordered a nighttime curfew in Paris and eight other French cities on Wednesday to contain the growing spread of COVID-19 in the country.

In a televised interview, Macron said that residents of those cities would not be allowed to be outdoors between 9:00 p.m. (1900 GMT) and 6:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) starting on Saturday, for a period. for at least four weeks, except for essential reasons.

“We have to act. We need to stop the spread of the virus,” Macron said, adding that the measure would prevent people from visiting restaurants and private homes in the late afternoon and evening.

In addition to Paris and its region, Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Rouen, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse were being targeted, Macron said.

“We will not leave the restaurant after 9:00 pm,” Macron said. “We will not be partying with friends because we know that is where the risk of contamination is greatest.”

Anyone found outdoors during curfew without special authorization will face a fine of 135 euros ($ 159), Macron said.

“We are in a worrying situation,” Macron said, although he insisted France has not “lost control” of the virus and a second total lockdown, like the two-month measure earlier this year, would be “disproportionate.”
