Police launched a manhunt after an 80-year-old woman was found crammed into a freezer at her own home in Pankop, near Mmamethlake.
According to police, the victim is alleged to have lived with her 10-year-old grandson and a caregiver, believed to be from Lesotho.
The caregiver was hired by the family to take care of the grandmother.
Police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli said Monday that the young man returned from school and discovered that no one was home. He realized that the door to the house was wide open, but the burglar-proof door was closed.
He then asked the neighbors about the whereabouts of his grandmother and the caretaker.
Search
“Neighbors tried to help in the search, while other relatives were also informed about the matter,” Mdhluli said.
As they searched, they noticed that the coffee table, gas stove, and a television were placed on top of the freezer, which they found suspicious.
“They took out the items and discovered the old woman’s lifeless body inside the freezer,” Mdhluli said.
Police and emergency personnel were called to the scene and the woman was pronounced dead.
A murder case has been opened and the police are appealing to a woman named MmaThato to go immediately to the nearest police station.
The police believe they can help in the investigation.
Meanwhile, a similar incident recently occurred between March and September 2020, where a 91-year-old woman was severely assaulted by a caregiver, who had been hired to care for her.
Mdluli said that after the incident, the 45-year-old suspect fled the scene and an assault case was opened with the intention of inflicting serious bodily harm.
The woman, believed to be from Lesotho, was located and arrested in Pretoria.
He is expected to appear before the Mbibana Magistrates Court on Friday, October 16, 2020, where he is expected to apply for bail.
