Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined Malala Yousafzai for a virtual chat Sunday to commemorate International Girl’s Day.
For the live chat, Harry and Meghan spoke with the women’s education activist about the barriers that prevent girls from going to school.
“When girls have access to education, everyone wins and everyone succeeds. It just opens the door to social success at the highest level,” Meghan said, before continuing to speak about the impact of the pandemic on education.
“This is not just about robbing a society of the cultural richness that comes with girls’ education,” she said. “He is also stealing childhood from these young women.”
Meghan added: “What I realized early on is that when women have a seat at the table, the conversations in terms of policy change, the conversations in terms of legislation, and the dynamics of the community change. And when there are to see how you get a woman to accept her voice, you have to start where she is a girl. “
Prince Harry also said of the impact girls can have on climate change: “The importance of girls’ education to help defuse climate change is absolutely critical, making them less susceptible to disasters.”
“The stakes are so high when we don’t give a young woman the opportunity to learn and receive an education,” Meghan continued.
Harry and Meghan went on to explain that while the pandemic has undoubtedly stopped everything, they have loved being able to spend time with one-year-old Archie during the lockdown.
“How are you spending your time at Covid?” Malala asked, to which they both joked, “On Zoom.”
Harry added, however, of being close to Archie: “We were both there for his first steps. His first run, his first fall, his first everything.”
Meghan said: “In many ways, we are fortunate to be able to have this time to watch it grow, and in the absence of Covid, we would be traveling and working more externally. We would lose a lot of those moments.”
Malala wished Harry and Meghan the best and sent her love to Archie before saying goodbye. “I’m nearsighted so I can’t see the screen clearly.
