Mashaba confused how Mamelodi Sundowns coaches will work together

The Orlando Pirates legend indicated that the trio deserve the opportunity to show what they can do in the new season.

Legendary South African coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba says Steve Komphela’s appointment as senior coach of the Mamelodi Sundowns is confusing.

Komphela occupies a senior coaching position alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena after his surprising resignation as head coach of the Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Masandawana’s management has had to make changes to its technical team after the departure of Pitso Mosimane and Mashaba, they are not very sure how the experiment will work.

“I’m still trying to figure out how this will work,” Mashaba told The Citizen.

“My question is how are they going to make decisions and listen to each other?” I ask.

Komphela is expected to report to coaches Mngqithi and Mokwena, who served as Mosimane’s assistants on the Chloorkop giants.

However, Sundowns has explained that Mngqithi’s opinion prevails when there is no consensus between him and Mokwena.

“To me, it sounds a bit confusing because the two coaches were doing well at the club and now you bring in another coach who has been doing well at his old club,” Mashaba said.

Rhulani once left Sundowns. Did we know what haunted him? What if it was a question of power? But let’s give it a try and see how it works. “

Mngqithi and Komphela are seasoned coaches, while Mokwena is a promising young coach who has had brief spells with the Orlando Pirates and Chippa United.

Mashaba went on to advise the trio to stick together as a unit and work well together with the Sundowns under pressure to defend the PSL title and the Nedbank Cup in the new season.

“Rhulani is still climbing and maturing and if you look at the combinations, there is room for good progress,” added the former Bafana Bafana coach.

“What will help you is to drop the ‘me’ and start using ‘us’. But it is not easy to hear people talk about “us”.

“If it happens that in front of people they say that they are working well together, the danger of that is that they can go behind each other’s back, saying things like ‘I’m the one who is making the team work.’

The first competitive match of the trio in charge of Sundowns will be against Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 2020 quarterfinal match on Sunday.

“What they need is to deal with egos because in this situation everyone wants praise on a team like Sundowns.”
