  • The body of a three-year-old boy was found in an old car in Mbekweni on Tuesday.
  • The boy and a four-year-old girl, who were found alive in the car, were reported missing on Monday.
  • They were last seen playing outside of their Newton residence.

The body of a three-year-old boy was found in an old car in Mbekweni, north of Cape Town, on Tuesday morning, while a girl who disappeared with him was found alive inside the vehicle.

Western Cape Police spokesman Colonel Andrè Traut said the car was parked in the backyard of a home in Corona Crescent, Newtown.

He said the 4-year-old boy and girl were reported missing Monday by their parents after they were last seen playing outside their Newtown home.

Police officers and residents had searched for the children Monday night, with no luck.

The girl was admitted to the hospital for observation.

The police have opened an investigation and the exact cause of death is still unknown.

No arrests have been made at this time.
