Johannesburg – Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced 83 more Covid-19-related deaths and 888 new infections on Monday night.

This brings South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll to 17,863 and infections to more than 693,359.

The number of recoveries in the country is 624,659, which means that nine out of 10 people infected with the virus are recovering.

South Africa has the 11th highest number of Covid-19 infections in the world, and the United States, Brazil, India, Russia, Spain, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Mexico and France have the most cases in the world. The United States has more than 8 million cases, the highest number in the world, while France has just over 740,000, the 10th in most cases in the world.

In South Africa, new infections are slowing down in the country, but Mkhize has again warned of the dangers of a second wave on Monday.

He said Monday that the second wave would come if people were complacent and didn’t wear masks and practiced social distancing.

“We have to be very realistic here and not deal with this emotionally or try to create a controversy about it,” Mkhize was quoted as saying by eNCA.

“It is a simple issue, we cannot say if we will get a second wave or not, but the risk is there. At this time, we have not seen an increase that indicates that there is a second wave, but we cannot say that people should be complacent, “he said.

The Health Department said it had now screened more than 4.4 million people in the public and private sectors, with nearly 11,000 tests performed in the past 24 hours.

The death toll from coronavirus in South Africa now stands at 17,863.

Gauteng province has the highest number of deaths, with 4,461, followed by the Western Cape, with 4,260, the Eastern Cape with 3,300 and KZN, with 3,006, have the highest number of deaths in the country.

Of the last 83 deaths, Mkhize said the majority of those killed came from the Free State.

Deaths by province:

Free status: 43, including 1 in the last 48 hours

Eastern Cape – 17

Gauteng: 11, including 2 in the last 48 hours

Western Cape: 7, including 5 in the last 48 hours
