The same group embarked on a protest in September in an attempt to shut down Durban and handed over a memorandum of demands to the ANC provincial office.

As the meeting continued inside on Tuesday, men dressed in military garb and brandishing banners that read “we join MK to liberate this country, we are still ready,” chanted fighting songs outside.

They expected Magashule, Maphatsoe and the ANC provincial secretary Mdumiseni Ntuli to address them after the meeting.

The memorandum delivered to the ANC during the “Durban closure” march two weeks ago included demands to ban foreigners from employment in transportation, hospitality, education, medical sectors, and strategic positions of state-owned companies, including the employment as domestic and agricultural workers.

The list of demands ended with a call for “meaningful and decent jobs and opportunities for former members of parliament and other veterans of the liberation war.”

Ntombela said that the delegation within the meeting included “truckers, street vendors and unemployed graduates” who were present to voice their requests.
