Cape Town – A Free State farmer had to jump into a swimming pool after being attacked by two men and spilling gasoline on him.
Andries Smith Myburgh was having lunch at his Vandermerwesdam country home in the Koffiefontein district around 1.45 p.m. Monday when he smelled smoke outside his home.
When he went to investigate, he was attacked by two men. He only realized it was on fire when he shot the suspects as they fled.
“He went to investigate and was hit with an object on the head, but managed to drive the suspect away,” said police spokesman Brig. Motantsi Makhele.
Apparently, he was attacked with a knife by a second suspect and gasoline was poured on him in the process. The victim managed to remove his firearm and the suspects fled.
He fired several shots in his direction and as he fired, he realized he was on fire. He jumped into the pool, ”Makhele said.
Myburgh alerted the police and neighbors.
“One suspect was identified as being about 2 meters tall, wearing green pants and a light blue shirt. The other had a blue jumpsuit.
” Both suspects are unknown to the complainant. The complainant was treated by medical personnel, but did not suffer serious injuries, ”said Makhele.
This comes as emotions are at a fever pitch in the Free State farming community after the brutal murder of 21-year-old Paul Roux farm manager Brendin Horner. His body was found with a rope around his neck and tied to a post.
On the day that Sekwetje Mahlamba and Sekola Matlaletsa appeared before Senekal Magistrates Court, farmers from all over the country flocked to Senekal to express their anger at the farm killings.
AfriForum Executive Vice President Ernst Roets called on the government over the weekend to crack down on farm killings.
“People are angry and fed up with the inaction of the South African government. We have had President Cyril Ramaphosa in an international forum in 2018 and when asked about the murders on farms, he denied that it exists. And more recently, two weeks ago, we had Police Minister Bheki Cele saying that farm killings are something that shouldn’t be a priority for the police. “
