Paul Scholes urges Man Utd to turn to his former teammate to “take the pressure off” Ed Woodward

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged his former team to bring back Edwin van der Sar as football director.

The club’s transfer policy came under fire during the summer window, and CEO Ed Woodward faced intense scrutiny.

Many have pointed to the absence of “football people” from decision-making positions at Old Trafford, a problem many believe has hampered them in recent years.

United lost Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland in January, while they spent much of the closed season trying and not signing Jadon Sancho.

United have not been able to sign Sancho and Haaland in the last 12 months

And Scholes, who has been particularly damning with the club’s management, feels the former United goalkeeper would provide instant benefits in the transfer market.

“I think a soccer director would take a lot of pressure off Ed Woodward, of course he would,” Scholes told Stadium Astro.

“I think Ed is very good at running the club and making money for the club.

“I’m not sure I have the football knowledge it takes to go out and sign players and clearly there have been some problems getting deals on the line.

“I think a football director would be very good to get him out of the spotlight a bit.

“It seems we don’t want to go down that path. I don’t know if they’ve looked at people and can’t find the right person.”

Van der Sar has held a similar position at Ajax for the past four years, garnering great applause for the development and acquisition of talent.

Scholes hinted that he would be willing to help his old team in a more informal capacity, but the dedicated role should go to the Dutchman.

Edwin van der Sar has impressed during his time at Ajax

He added: “I suppose you could be a consultant, over the phone, ‘what do you think of this player?’ That could always help. But I think someone like Edwin van der Sar would be perfect.

“He has done that job at Ajax, it was always a role he wanted to get into. He has been to college and studied for that position.

“The likes of Rio and Fletch are really similar to me, it’s more of a consultancy, what do you think of this player? Someone to call and give an idea. “
