After what happened the last time Liverpool played, everyone associated with the club needed a well deserved boost in morale. They got it on Monday when it was rumored that Thiago Alcântara and Sadio Mané went back to training.
The humiliation at Villa Park left us all empty, confused and struggling to understand exactly what happened. It hasn’t helped having a two-week break without club football to distract himself and correct mistakes that night.
When Jürgen Klopp’s men are heading to Goodison Park to face local rivals Everton this weekend, there will be a host of returning faces ideally available for selection, or in contention at least. There will still not be Alisson Becker, which in itself is a great blow, but the return of Mané and Thiago would give everyone connected in Liverpool a confidence boost.
You could see what effect Mané you can get into a match just by watching his performance against Arsenal. By dictating virtually every key moment in the game, including on defense, he set the tone for tracking down and assisting defenders. That influence was greatly missed at Villa Park and would be more than welcome on the journey through Stanley Park.
We are yet to see the full effect Thiago can have on this Liverpool team, despite the 45-minute cameo against Chelsea leaving us all purring and desperate for more. By taking on the robust side of Carlo Ancelotti, Thiago could provide the creative spark in midfield that Aston Villa lacked.
Let’s not forget another player who was missing at Villa Park. Skipper Jordan Henderson often helps organize the entire team and his absence was more than notable. This time around, Liverpool will hopefully have multiple options in the contest to at least make it to the team of the day.

It will look like a completely different Liverpool, certainly for the better. You can’t underestimate the morale boost that even a key returning player can have in the mood around training ground, let alone three at a time.
Liverpool need to become unpredictable, something that Klopp and Pep Lijnders were asking for even before the season started. They’ll get their wish for the Goodison trip, that’s for sure. Can anyone be sure which lineup Klopp will choose to face the Merseyside derby? You can try, but the chances that you are right are slim.
What I read on Liverpool.com
Ollie has written a fascinating article looking at Liverpool’s pitching tactics and how they should rethink the way they approach them, particularly in the final third.
Joel has also written an article exploring how the plan for Roberto Firmino’s successor could come from Borussia Dortmund, but not with Jadon Sancho and instead with a player who hasn’t even been linked with a move to Anfield.
What i am seeing
Liverpool released a video showing the key moments from Klopp’s five-year reign at Anfield. It’s definitely worth a look, and it certainly takes you on a journey back in time.
