Police spokesman Motantsi Makhele said Myburgh escaped with minor injuries.

“He went to investigate and was hit with an object on the head, but managed to push the suspect away. Apparently a second suspect attacked him with a knife and, in the process, they poured gasoline on him, ”Makhele said.

He added: “The victim managed to draw his firearm and the suspects fled. He fired several shots in his direction, and as he fired, he realized he was on fire. He jumped into the pool. “
