A Free State farmer had to jump into his pool after catching fire while shooting at assailants who had doused him with gasoline during an attack Monday.

According to police spokesman Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the farmer, Andries Smith Myburgh, 31, was having lunch at his farmhouse on the Vandermerwesdam farm in the Koffiefontein district around 1:45 p.m. when he smelled smoke.

He investigated and received a blow to the head, but managed to push the attacker away. A second person reportedly attacked him with a knife and doused him with gasoline.

“The victim managed to pull out his firearm and the suspects fled. He fired several shots in the direction of the suspects and while shooting, he realized that [was] on fire and jumped into the pool, “Makhele said.

The two attackers fled on foot. The complainant alerted the police and neighbors.

“One suspect was identified as large, approximately two meters tall, wearing green pants and a light blue shirt. The other was wearing a blue suit. Both suspects are unknown to the complainant.”

The farmer had no serious injuries and was treated by medical personnel.
