CAPE TOWN – Former public protector Thuli Madonsela said the government needed to review its spending on things like security for officials and ministers.

He said the state should focus on welfare during these tough economic times and should redirect its spending from things like security to more important needs.

Madonsela joined civil society organizations in an urgent press conference on Monday calling for an extension of the R350 COVID-19 social distress relief grant and the caregiver grant to R585 per month.

Madonsela said that all social assistance related to COVID-19 should be extended.

He said the country could be short of money, but could find funds in other less important programs such as security.

“It is unnecessary. South Africa is not the most dangerous country in Africa. But the kind of security we provide to members of the executive and others is quite excessive for a country like ours. I believe money can be transferred from other places to ensure this grant continues

Madonsela also said that people living in poverty are always the first to receive a heavy hand in times of crisis.

“Finances are low. It is very easy to download what is easy to download. And, of course, the poor are always the first to be considered expendable.

He said social assistance had also helped regenerate local economies.
