Robinho has volunteered to receive a salary of just £ 200 per month upon his return to Santos children’s club for a fourth term.
The former Manchester City striker was the Blues’ deadline signing in 2008 to welcome the club’s new owners after Sheikh Mansour took office.
However, Robinho’s signing did not have the desired effect, as he scored 16 goals in 53 games before leaving on loan to Santos 18 months later. He left for AC Milan for good in the summer of 2010, before returning to play for Santos, Guangzhou Evergrande, Atlético Mineiro, Sivasspor and Istanbul Basaksehir.
After helping Basaksehir clinch the league title last season, Robinho, now 36, has returned to Santos once again, saying he should never have left to join Real Madrid in the first place in 2005.
And to help the club, he volunteered to receive the minimum wage of R $ 1,500 Brazilian reais, the equivalent of £ 208 per month, or £ 52 per week.
“It has always been my home here,” he told Santos’ website. “My goal is to help on and off the field and bring Santos back to the highest place, which is where I should never have gone. Wonderful feeling of being able to return to the club that designed me for football. This is where I grew up. I always dreamed of being a player and Santos made it possible.
“Santos is going through a difficult financial time. So this is the time for those who can do something. I want to help the club that always gave me everything. Santos has already done a lot for me and this lap is still short.
“I will play for a minimum wage, but the most important thing is to be here. I am physically and mentally well, obviously there is still a bit of a rhythm, but with time we will evolve.”
