Saps allegedly involved in stock theft

JOHANNESBURG – The Independent Police Directorate of Investigations is investigating allegations of police collusion in the theft of cattle in and around the Free State town of Senekal.

This, as Police Minister Bheki Cele, confirmed that a suspect in the Brendin Horner murder case has previously been arrested 16 times.

“One of them has been arrested twice, but the other has been arrested 16 times. I would like to know why a person who has been arrested 16 times has another opportunity to commit another crime.”

Almost two weeks ago, the farm foreman was found murdered, apparently after running into cattle thieves who turned on him.

The photos of suspected cattle thieves are part of an extensive file. Most surprising is the alleged link to the police.

Farmers who carried out their own investigations traced cell phone and vehicle numbers back to police officers.

Horner’s alleged killers are expected to return to court on Friday.

Cele says the police will be deployed in number to prevent a repeat of the violent scenes that unfolded last week.
