Steve Komphela has started to run strong at Mamelodi Sundowns after he was introduced to players and coaching staff on the same day he announced his arrival at Chloorkop on Monday.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach wasted no time making himself at home in the league champions and immediately donned Brazilian colors, joining joint coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena for his first training session with the Sundowns.
The 53-year-old former Bafana coach Bafana announced his arrival at Chloorkop with a statement he issued on Monday morning.
The statement lacked transparency on what the description of “senior coach” will imply, as he described his new role at the club.
But TimesLIVE understands that Komphela’s title won’t necessarily be that of assistant coach or be called by that name. He joined as a “senior coach” and will report to joint coaches Mngqithi and Mokwena.
Mngqithi was privileged to have the final say in case there was an issue they could not agree with Mokwena on when Sundowns announced his appointment last week.
Komphela did not disclose the length of his contract with Sundowns.
He has coached up to seven clubs in the Premiership in the last decade after having mentored the Free State Stars, Platinum Stars, Maritzburg United, Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic before joining the Lamontville Golden Arrows in December 2018.
Komphela got his biggest coaching performance in club football when he joined Chiefs on a three-year contract in 2015.
Having failed to win any trophies since his arrival at Naturena, he was forced to resign before his contract expired after Chiefs fans launched a violent attack on him at Moses Mabhida Stadium in April 2018.
Violence erupted at the end of the Chiefs’ 2-0 Nedbank Cup loss to their former club Free State Stars and fans stormed the field after the final whistle, on a night that also cost Komphela his spot.
He announced that he would resign minutes after the game ended at the post-game press conference.
The hooligans who invaded the field attacked security personnel with plastic chairs, damaged billboards and tore down a steel barricade that was supposed to keep fans off the field.
He joined Celtic in July 2018, but financial difficulties at the Bloemfontein club led him to stay for only six months before moving to Golden Arrows.
