Iker Casillas has explained why he believes that Cristiano Ronaldo surpasses Lionel Messi in the debate between the “two phenomenal players”.
The legend of the Spanish goalkeeper has given his verdict on the eternal football argument of who is better between the Portuguese striker Ronaldo and the Argentine maestro Messi.
Between them, the pair have 11 Ballon d’Ors and trophy cabinets packed with medals from Champions League winners and other major European awards.
But Casillas believes that Ronaldo, with whom he played at Real Madrid for six years, wins the debate and explains his decision.

“Cristiano always had a great desire to be the best, since he was a child and I think he has achieved it,” said the 39-year-old. ESPN .
“If I have to compare him to Messi, what Cristiano has done is more impressive because we all know the talent that Messi has, but Cristiano was determined and worked hard to be the best.
“I feel like we were lucky to have had two phenomenal players.

“To people who don’t know Cristiano, he may seem cocky and arrogant, but it’s the opposite.”
Casillas won La Liga, two Copa del Rey titles and the Champions League while playing with Ronaldo, adding to his brilliant career with Los Blancos.
He was also Spain’s captain in two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup, while making the difficult decision to leave Real Madrid in 2015, 25 years after joining the club as a child.

Casillas moved to Porto and won the Portuguese league title in 2018, but suffered a heart attack a year later and announced his retirement from the game this summer.
Reflecting on his career, he added: “I was very fortunate with how things turned out, sadly not everyone’s case.
“It has changed me, you have to do the things you like and live your life.
“I have talked to people I have not talked to in a long time. Now I live day to day, I focus on what I can do today and I don’t worry about tomorrow or next week.”
