Durban – The chairman of the Financial and Fiscal Commission, Professor Daniel Plaatjies, has passed away.
According to a statement issued by his family, Plaatjies died of natural causes on Saturday.
Professor Plaatjies was appointed chairman of the CTF Commission on June 1.
Plaatjies was described as a South African patriot who dedicated his life to the cause of social justice and non-racism. He was also an outstanding intellectual and made a significant contribution to scholarship even as he was actively engaged in the creation of South African democracy.
FFC Vice President Michael Sachs said Plaatjies’ keen and insightful contribution to financial and fiscal debates will be deeply missed in Parliament and public life.
“The commission itself has lost a capable and energetic president, who had raised the CTF to a new level.
Professor Plaatjies has a PhD in Governance, Public Policy and Public Finance from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was director of the School of Government at the University of the Witwatersrand, former executive director of the
Human Sciences Research Council and visiting professor at the Business School of the University of the Free State. He served the Republic of South Africa in numerous positions in government, “Sachs said.
I know few people who have believed more fervently in the possibilities of our country than development activist Daniel Plaatjies. My heart is broken because you left us, you moved on to a higher duty

I am very saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Daniel Plaatjies. I have worked with him for years, I considered him a friend. He regularly attended parliamentary meetings and we would often meet at his favorite coffee shop to discuss the latest political developments together.

He was insightful with a cheerful argumentative style and he loved a good debate.
Professor Plaatjies’ family can be very proud of his long and distinguished contribution to South African public service. My deepest condolences to his family.
