A commercial theft suspect, who was arrested Friday by Port Elizabeth police, died at the hospital.

Police spokesman Col. Pricilla Naidu says two men stole cash, cigarettes and two cell phones at a Greenbushes cafe before fleeing the scene.

She says that during the chase, police fired two shots in an attempt to detain the suspects and their vehicle collided with a taxi on the N2 Uitenhage Road exit ramp.

Naidu says the 44-year-old driver was arrested at the scene, while a 34-year-old man escaped and jumped the railings of a bridge and fell into a river.

He was found in possession of a revolver and stolen cell phones.

Colonel Naidu says he suffered multiple injuries and was taken to hospital.

An investigation file was opened after his death on Sunday morning.

The remaining suspect will appear in court Monday on charges of commercial theft and possession of allegedly stolen property.
