JOHANNESBURG – The Special Investigation Unit said it is investigating tenders for personal protective equipment (PPE) worth R8 billion.
There have been numerous reports of PPE scandals across the country, the latest of which involved a multi-million dollar PPE tender in Gauteng.
A preliminary report from the unit prompted Gauteng Prime Minister David Makhura to fire Health MEC Bandile Masuku.
It was found that Masuku did not respect the Constitution and the regulations contained in the Public Finance Management Law.
The SIU has been working hard since March in the wake of reports of scandals in the EPP acquisition across the country.
Speaking to SABC, SIU’s Kaizer Kganyago said they were investigating more than 700 companies.
“We have many cases. We are focusing a lot on PPE. There are about 700 companies that we are analyzing. “
Kganyago said the tender for Eastern Cape R10.1 million scooters was also under investigation.
Since then, the SIU has obtained an order to suspend payments to the contractor.
He said they were investigating other issues as well, such as the Beitbridge border fence and the Lepelle Northern Water problem in Limpopo.
