Western Cape Police Ombudsman to Investigate Gang Unit Members and Other Officers

The Western Cape Police Ombudsman will investigate police officers and the province’s Anti-Gang Unit in connection with various allegations, including allegations that officers have abused their powers.

“The Western Cape Police Ombudsman will investigate allegations that the South African Police Service in the Western Cape Province, specifically members of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), are abusing their powers when exercising their duties and they fulfill their duties, “said Ombudsman spokesman Deidré Foster.

The investigation came after Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz received several complaints from the public, Foster said.

“The nature of the complaints is related to incorrect address records, harassment of innocent members of communities, unacceptable behavior, especially towards minors in public spaces and abuse of power by members of the AGU,” said Foster.

The public has been encouraged to comment and share their experiences with the ombudsman’s office.

The Ombudsman, Johan Brand, said: “It is important that our office recognizes the work of the members who serve in the AGU, as well as the significant impact it is supposed to have in our province on the phenomenon of gangs, however, we must further ensure that dishonest individuals in [the police] they are aimed, in particular, at those who do not act within the scope of the law “.
