JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng district attorney wants Prime Minister David Makhura to appoint a new health MEC and not wait for a final SIU report to possibly remove Bandile Masuku.

Makhura has removed Masuku after the unit’s investigation found that he failed to comply with the Constitution and regulations contained in the Public Finance Management Law.

The investigation was launched after widespread allegations emerged of irregularities in the procurement of personal protective equipment in Gauteng.

The district attorney believes that Makhura wants to rescue his political ally without replacing him yet.

Instead, Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo will continue to oversee matters at the provincial health department.

Makhura said on Friday that he would consider appointing a MEC when the SIU delivers its final report.

He also indicated that he would reinstate Masuku if the SIU cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Charity Moyo of the district attorney is not impressed.

“The district attorney asks Makhuru to rule out any reinstatement to the post and appoint a new MEC to fix the deep rot in this department.”

Meanwhile, Masuku prepares to challenge the SIU’s preliminary report in court.

In July, he was granted a special license pending investigations.

It was alleged that he oversaw the bidding processes that ultimately benefited his friends.
