International Bafana Bafana revealed that the four-time PSL-winning strategist is working on the mentality of the players

Kaizer Chiefs defender Ramahlwe ‘Rama’ Mphahlele praised the club’s new head coach, Gavin Hunt, as a proven winner.

The Soweto giants were quick to name Hunt as their coach after parting ways with German tactician Ernst Middendorp last month.

Hunt has been tasked with ending the Chiefs’ five-year trophy drought after having enjoyed some success at his previous clubs, Moroka Swallows, SuperSpot United and Bidvest Wits.

“Gavin Hunt has been in the game for a long time. He knows what South African football is about. He’s a proven winner, “Mphahlele told the club’s official website.

“He is very precise in what he wants. We focus on what to do when we have the ball, what to do when we don’t have the ball and how to take down opponents. “

“It was an agonizing end to the season. we all agree on that. Now, we just want to play and do things well, “he continued.

“He is different. He pushes us hard and clearly wants the best of all. One thing is clear, if you don’t work hard, you won’t be part of the team of the day.”

Mphahlele has met Hunt when the 56-year-old mentor handed Rama his first professional contract at Swallows in the 2006/2007 season, with the versatile defender who was trained at the club’s academy.

“The coach clearly loves working with young players. I’m seeing it now on Chiefs too. It’s interesting to see how he is putting pressure on them, “Rama said.

“The youngsters will have to step up and show that they are ready to compete for a starting position in the first team. I think what we need is a mix of older and younger players.”

The 30-year-old also explained that Hunt is working on the gamers’ mindset after the Soweto giants narrowly missed the PSL title on the final day of the 2019/20 season.

“From the first day of training, Hunt dedicated himself directly to tactics. Sure we run a lot, but above all it is with the ball. He also wants the training sessions to be done in a certain way, with a lot of intensity, “he added.

“It’s a bit early to talk about that game in detail, but we’re all looking forward to getting back to playing a competitive game and changing the mindset of losing the league trophy.”

The Chiefs will face Maritzburg United in the MTN8 quarter-final match on October 18, before beginning their league campaign against the Mamelodi Sundowns on October 24.
