Johannesburg – The 52-year-old farmer charged with attempted murder, intentional damage to property and incitement to violence and terrorism for his alleged role in the burning of a police van during a protest in Senekal, Free State, will spend five more days in police custody.

This after the Senekal Court of First Instance postponed André Pienaar’s bail hearing until Tuesday today, after the State opposed his request for bail, alleging that the defendant had a violent streak and had previously served three years in prison for robbery.

The man was detained by Free State police on Wednesday for allegedly playing a role in the downing and burning of a police van Tuesday during a violent protest by a group of farmers in Senekal Magistrates Court.

Disgruntled farmers stormed court demanding justice for Brendin Horner, the slain 21-year-old Paul Roux farm manager, whose body was discovered tied to a post, stabbed and wounded to the head last weekend.

The group of farmers wanted the two suspects, Sekwetje Mahlamba and Sekola Matlaletsa, who had appeared in court in connection with Horner’s murder, to be turned over to them.

The spokesman for the Free State National Tax Authority, Phaladi Shuping, said the state had opposed the farmer’s request for official bail due to the seriousness of the crimes and the fact that the 52-year-old had previously served a three-year sentence for robbery after being charged in 2011..

“The request for bail was carried out today in court, but the magistrate did not issue a sentence and the case was postponed until October 13 for the magistrate to decide whether to grant bail or not.

“The defendant is still in custody until Tuesday next week,” Phaladi said.
