Two people were reportedly caught in possession of Rand 25 million worth of Transnet property during a sting operation at a steel and manufacturing company in Alberton on Thursday.

Hawks spokesman Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu said in a statement that a multidisciplinary operation by the Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation Unit, the Provincial Police Department of Criminal Intelligence and Ekurhuleni Metro, with the support of Transnet, resulted in the “swift arrest of plant and operations managers of a steel and manufacturing company in Alberton for possession of infrastructure material.”

The arrest followed intelligence on suspected non-ferrous metals that were allegedly scheduled to be recycled at the steel and manufacturing company, Mulamu said.

The police executed a search and seizure warrant and seized items identified as belonging to Transnet. Some of the items included oversized bridges, contact cables, overhead cables, train tracks and springs worth an estimated R25 million.

The two detainees, aged 45 and 28, have been accused of contravening Law 18 of 2015 amending criminal matters and Law 6 of second-hand goods of 2009.
