Two managers behind bars for possession of Rand 25 million worth of Transnet assets

Two managers of a steel and manufacturing company in Alberton were arrested after being found in possession of infrastructure materials belonging to Transnet with an estimated value of R25m.

The couple, aged 28 and 45 respectively, were captured on Thursday during a multidisciplinary operation by Hawk’s serious organized crime investigation unit, criminal intelligence and Ekurhuleni metro police, supported by Transnet.

The spokesman for the Hawks, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, said tThe investigation team tracked intelligence on suspicious non-ferrous metals scheduled to be transported and recycled at a steel and fabrication company at Alrode in Alberton.

“Upon arrival, a search and seizure warrant was executed and items that Transnet positively identified as theirs were seized, including oversized bridges, contact cables, overhead cables, railways and springs with an estimated value of R25m. The two men were immediately arrested, ”he said.

The men were expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court Friday after being charged with violating Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015 and Secondhand Property Act 6 of 2009.

Investigations are ongoing.
