He said the ministry consulted with the provinces to find out why there was such an increase in deaths.

“We have received reports that the provinces are implementing the MRC recommendations to reconcile the data with the death data from home affairs. In addition, the provinces are auditing the death data either by extracting data from the DATCOV [a sentinel hospital surveillance system] surveillance reports and identification of unreported deaths or auditing of facilities on the ground, ”said Mkhize.

He said this “robust refinement of data collection” should be welcomed.

“We are reassured that, moving forward, we exercise precision in our epidemiological surveillance,” said the minister.

Of the new deaths on Thursday, 18 were in the Eastern Cape, six in the Free State and Limpopo, 105 in KwaZulu-Natal, 13 in Gauteng, four in Mpumalanga and eight in the Western Cape.

Mkhize also announced that 1,736 new infections were recorded in the past 24 hours, bringing the national count to 686,891. There were also 618,771 recoveries.

Figures were based on a total of 4,339,686 tests, of which 21,172 were performed in the last 24-hour cycle.
