JOHANNESBURG – As the state’s capture inquiry commission is due to hear a request on Friday for former President Jacob Zuma to be summoned to appear, his supporters in Gauteng were preparing to march calling on Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo to recuse himself.
The group, known as “The Support Group for President Zuma of RET,” was expected to march to both the commission and the Constitutional Court.
In a lengthy memorandum, they argued that with Zondo as the chairman of the commission, Zuma would not get a fair hearing and South Africans will be denied a full understanding of how the state capture was carried out.
Zuma has been on a collision course with the investigation, which was established as a result of his relationship with the Gupta family and did not show up when called to do so.
Zuma’s advocacy group leader Carl Niehaus said: “And indeed, the commission has proven to be very selective in who it approaches and in terms of the evidence and information it hears and allows to come forward.”
He said they were asking the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng to intervene as well, as he was the one who appointed his deputy to chair the commission.
“We believe that he is not serving the purpose that we believe the Chief Justice intended it to serve when he appointed him,” Niehaus said.
