“He was subsequently arrested by the Brazilian authorities in August 2013 on the charge of false documentation and, sadly, he was released in 2015 after serving a sentence for this crime,” Naidoo said.
Once again, Interpol Pretoria worked to locate him, seeking help from the Brazilian authorities.
“In June 2020, the collaborative efforts of the investigation teams culminated in the arrest of the murdered fugitive at an identified address in Brazil. He had been in police custody in a public prison in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, since his arrest.
“After a lengthy investigation, the murdered fugitive will return to the country to face a crime he allegedly committed a little less than a decade ago,” Naidoo said.
SAPS management has praised the researchers’ work.
“This is the culmination of the hard work and tireless efforts of our law enforcement officers. In fact, this is a victory for us as a service. Thank you to the team, who did not give up even after years of hard work.
“Our goal is to end the family and friends of the deceased, as well as to ensure that justice is served,” said National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole.
