Play station Wednesday gave us a “close and personal look” at the hardware of the PlayStation 5 (PS5). Don’t try this at home; Aside from the obvious health risks, it will also void the manufacturer’s warranty.
The teardown of the PS5 was introduced by Yasuhiro Ootori, Vice President of the Hardware Design Division at Sony Interactive Entertainment. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?
PS5 teardown: here’s what we learned
Ootori begins by taking a quick look at the ports (the 480Mbps Hi-Speed USB Type-A port and the SuperSpeed 10Gpbs USB Type-C port) along with the dimensions (104mm width, 390mm height, and 260mm). mm deep).
There are also two additional 10Gbps USB-A SuperSpeed ports on the back. It’s clear from the outset that the PS5 is taller and wider than the PlayStation 4 (PS4). However, it will be much easier to mount the PS5 horizontally.
The PS5 also has a Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, as well as a single HDMI-out port for connecting the console to your television. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1.

Ports, panels and storage
There are two panels mounted on either side of the PS5, and these can be removed quite easily (again, we stress: don’t try this at home). Ootori also shows a dust collector located inside the console.
Personally, I’m excited about the fact that you could upgrade the console’s internal storage by adding an NVMe SSD (which is a non-volatile memory Express solid state device).
Anyone who has had to delete their screenshot gallery before starting a new game will understand my pain. I play role-playing games and I love the photo mode. I always run out of space; it is a constant fight in our home.
You could add any PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD to increase storage. (This is a mouthful, but here it goes: Peripheral Component Interconnect Express 4.0 Non-volatile Memory Express Solid State Device. Ha!)
Ootori showed two M.2 slots located under the side panels. In the United States, a 1TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD costs about $ 200 (R3 300); is available on Amazon.
Base storage
The PS5 has 825GB of base storage SSDs with a custom SSD controller to ensure maximum transfer rates. Goodbye slow loading screens, hello future.
Below, Ootori shows us why the PS5 is so much bigger than the PS4. And that’s because the PS5 houses a very efficient cooling system.
The PS5 is a beast of a machine, with the graphics card running at 10.3TFLOPs (teraflops), making it roughly five times more powerful than the measly PS4.
Additionally, the PS5 is powered by an eight-core AMD Ryzen CPU clocked at 3.5 GHz, along with 16GNB of GDDR6 video memory (another mouthful: Graphics 6 Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory).
PS5 cooling system
Sony added air intakes and a large 120mm fan to cool the system, along with a massive heatsink that achieves vapor chamber-like performance and takes up nearly half the commercial space of the PS5. The entire rear panel serves as an exhaust.
But if you think it’s awesome, wait until Ootori gets to the liquid metal TIM (thermal interface material). Due to the amount of heat the PS5 generates, Sony had to find an innovative solution.
The heatsink alone will not optimally cool the console as contact with the chip will result in thermal resistance. Solution?
Use an interface material to conduct heat. TIM (Thermal Interface Material) is more expensive than normal thermal paste, but has better conductivity.
