JOHANNESBURG – The agricultural organization TLU South Africa has expressed concern about the possibility of an escalation of protests if the government does not urgently address the killings and attacks on farms.
A 52-year-old farmer was arrested Wednesday for his alleged involvement in state-owned arson and vandalism during a riot outside Senekal Magistrates Court earlier this week.
Community members stormed the court where two men briefly appeared for the murder of the local farm manager, Brendin Horner.
Bennie van Zyl of TLU SA said that while they condemned the scenes of violence and chaos that erupted outside of court, the anger of the community was justified.
“The level of being fed up with the recent series of attacks must be understood. So, to a large extent, the events in Senekal confirm our concerns that they may have repercussions and more consequences, ”he said.
Meanwhile, Free State police said more arrests were imminent after widespread criticism for failing to intervene properly during this week’s uproar.
