The process followed by the parliamentary ad hoc committee has also been criticized as a showcase by DA and EFF following a letter written by ANCYL national task force leader Thandi Mahambehlala to ANC Under Secretary General Jessie Duarte, containing the names of the “preferred candidates” for the NYDA board, were leaked to the media.
Four names included in the letter to Duarte – Sifiso Mtsweni, Thuthukile Zuma, Karabo Mohale and Avela Majujaba – finally made it to the final list of recommended candidates.
Mtsweni is the most recent NYDA president whose term has expired and previously served as the leader of ANCYL, while Zuma is a well-known ANC activist who is the daughter of former President Jacob Zuma.
The NYDA, which had a budget of just over R500 million last year, has long been criticized as “an employment agency” by ANC loyalists and cadres.
Xaso said the objections have been referred to the ad hoc committee for reconsideration.
“The report was returned to the committee for further consideration, it is now before the committee,” he said.
