A very pregnant school principal is among a group of people arrested when the Gauteng police and education department cracked down on illegal schools in Ivory Park, on the outskirts of Midrand, Johannesburg.
The woman is one of the two directors arrested during the raids. The police also detained 16 illegal immigrants.
“These are the people who could not prove they are in the country legally,” said police spokesman Cpt Bernard Matimulane.
More than 1,000 students will be affected by the closure of illegal schools in the area.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who joined the raid, said that the illegal the institutions created serious problems for the department.
“These children have been taught by people who are not qualified to teach our children. The infrastructure is not conducive to learning, there are no emergency exits and I don’t know the curriculum they are teaching, ”he said.
Lesufi added that the affected students do not not receive reports and after passing grade 10 they had nowhere to go to finish his studies.
“These children have no academic reports and will end up on the streets …” said Lesufi.
