A relative found a 12-month-old baby crying out for help in a pool of blood this week alongside the bodies of his young parents who were hacked to death with a panga in the village of GaRapitsi-Itireleng in Limpopo, on the outskirts of Modjadjiskloof.
The bodies of the young couple Nius Malatji, 21, and Lucia Malapane, 18, a 12th grader at Khubudi High School, who was also allegedly raped, were found with multiple deep wounds on Tuesday.
Nius’s aunt, Mokadi Malatji, told Sowetan yesterday that she made the gruesome discovery when she went for a routine check-up at the home.
“When I heard the boy cry, I thought his parents were still sleeping, but I called several times and there was no answer. I called a neighbor and he broke a glass door to get in,” Malatji said.
She said that the room where the two were killed was full of blood. “I found the girl crying and holding a bottle of a cold drink that the couple drank on Monday night. Lucia was stung with a panga on her head and neck, and we found her naked with her upper body lying on the bed “he said.
Malatji, visibly surprised, added that Nius was also attacked with a panga all over his body and had suffered several deep wounds to the head.
Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the couple was found naked.
Mojapelo said they are investigating two murder charges and have issued a bounty for any information that may lead to the arrest of the killer (s). “We are investigating two murder charges. At this time, the motive for the murder is unknown and can only be determined by police investigations, which continue.”
Nius’s sister, Motlatso Malatji, said the family demanded justice for the couple’s gruesome murder. “They left a baby that will need the love of its parents. We want the police to arrest the killers and tell us why they killed these young people,” he said.
Mojapelo said police were offering a 200,000 rand reward for any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects involved in the killings.
