Johannesburg – The police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigations Directorate (Ipid), said on Wednesday that it has completed an investigation of two police officers based at Alexandra Police Station in Gauteng facing charges for killing Samantha Radebe.
The newlywed Radebe, 31, who was returning from work, was shot and killed in January, allegedly in the crossfire between police officers and suspected criminals. He had been waiting for his family to open the door for him.
The incident sparked protests in the municipality, and residents demanded justice.
The Alexandra community has always maintained that the fatal shot came from a police officer’s gun.
Ipid spokeswoman Ndileka Cola said the pair of police officers named in the killing are scheduled to appear in Alexandra Magistrates Court on Friday.
“It is alleged that Samantha was shot while police were chasing a motor vehicle hijacking suspect earlier this year on his way home,” Cola said.
In January, shortly after the shooting, Ipid announced that the police officers involved in the shooting with the alleged kidnapper in Alexandra could be charged with murder, if it was established that their firearms fired and killed Radebe.
This despite the fact that the agents fired while trying to apprehend the alleged kidnapper, who had shot them. At the time, it was unclear who fired the fatal shot between police and the suspect.
Another passerby was also shot and left in critical condition.
The allegations are that police were on a routine patrol when they saw a vehicle that had been hijacked from the Marlboro Gautrain station earlier that day.
They reportedly tried to stop the car, but the occupant is said to have pulled out a firearm and fired at the police, who then retaliated.
The alleged kidnapper was subsequently arrested.
