The time of impunity is over, warns Shamila Batohi, head of the NPA

He said that after an anti-corruption workshop held last year, prosecution directors were asked to prioritize cases. In total, 33 were identified.

“What is important to bear in mind is that, in addition to the 33 cases, we committed ourselves to the DPCme [Hawks] and they gave us a list. It’s a total of 87 cases we’re focusing on. And today, 26 cases have been registered since April 2020, those that meet this criterion that we are talking about, ”said Batohi.

She said that while 26 may not be a large number, it shows that the wheels of justice are turning.

“In the past, these cases may never have seen the inside of a courtroom and the fact that these cases are now beginning to go to court shows that things are changing and the days of impunity are changing. ”.

Imminent budget cuts

Batohi warned, however, of a threat of imminent budget cuts facing the NPA, which may threaten to derail its work.

“Given the demands of the NPA, and the crisis that we are facing in SA now due to the impact on the economy, we really have to be careful that the NPA does not lose any of the money it received,” he said.
