CAPE TOWN – Lawmakers say Public Works Minister Patricia de Lille should be criminally charged for her involvement in the controversial Beitbridge border fence.

That is the opinion of the parliamentarians who are part of the public works supervision committee that has inspected the controversial infrastructure.

The committee is the second to call for action against De Lille this week after the permanent public accounts committee criticized the minister’s involvement on Tuesday.

The Special Investigation Unit has cleared De Lille of any wrongdoing.

Instead, it ruled against 14 officials from the Public Works Department and called for them to be disciplined and charged.

But the member of the public works committee, Elphas Buthelezi, said De Lille could not get out of trouble.

“I mean it is corruption. So if it is found to be true, it means criminal charges must be brought against the minister. No one should be left out when it comes to the issue of law. All citizens of South Africa must face the consequences when they break the law ”.

DA MP Madeleine Hicklin said those implicated should be in prison.

The committee now wants all investigations to be completed, as its goal is to ensure that this type of wasteful spending does not happen again.
