Brother of Vernon Philander, former Proteas star, shot dead

Cape Town – Tyrone Philander, the younger brother of former Proteas star Vernon Philander, was shot and killed in Ravensmead around lunchtime on Wednesday.

Western Cape Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that police are investigating a murder case after a shooting around 1.10pm at the corners of 7th Avenue and Webner Street in Ravensmead, where a man 32-year-old was shot and fatally injured.

Ravensmead Community Police Forum spokeswoman Zelda Tantraal confirmed that Tyrone Philander had been the victim.

Tantraal told EWN that the Philander family still does not know what happened. “They don’t know what happened. They were in the yard, busy with the washing and heard shots ”.

Tyrone was reportedly hauling a cart of water to a neighbor when he was shot. A reporter for the African News Agency (ANA) said his distraught mother Bonita, accompanied by a family member, watched in horror as her son’s body lay in the street.

Condolences reached social media for the deceased, with Ravensmead residents insisting that he had not been involved with gangs. Vernon Philander has two other brothers, Brandon and Darryl.
